  1. The internet is the most productive service humans have right now. A person can get information from the internet with a blink of an eye. How do we value the use of it? How does the government get involve in our lives through the use of the internet?? How is our privacy in danger? How can we prevent the government in meddling in our lives? These are some of the questions that we could ask ourselves when using the internet. Susan B. Barnes and Anders Albrechtslund all talked about how dangerous the internet is in their articles “A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States.” and “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance.” These articles agree with my point that the internet is very dangerous for this generation and the generation to come too. We should be more aware of the threats that the internet poses to us.

  2. Social networks are the way we communicate and have conversations. It is a big part of ur life. We spend most of our time on different social networks and communicate with multipal different people. The authors of Is The Internet The Harbinger Of Orwell's Nightmares? By Peter Brand and A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking In The United States by Susan B. Barnes have mention that with these social networks the goverment is not involved and not always sharing the correct information. There can be censorship, abuse, and hidden conteols over internet access. The social netwoks work many ways and have many uses like geograpical tagging which can let to sexual predation with out knowing. All of this can also be a potential damages to academic and career opportunities deppending on what kind of infromation we willing to give out to the world. These authors have expained ways we can manage to have a soulution for our probems by a breakdown of boundaries and online social interaction, so we nderstand the difference.

  3. Social networking is one of the internet’s greatest features that have captured the attention of teenagers and young adults. Today, millions of teens and young adults in the United States are members of social sites such as Facebook and enjoy the fact that they are able to communicate and essentially interact with each other via online. This has become the new trend of entertainment and while most are busy reading their friend’s posts and posting information of their own, very little people stop to think about where their information goes and how is being used. Social networking is becoming the root of major problems in our society that needs to be combated. Every individual may not stop using social networks but surely they need to be aware of the type and how much information they are providing on social sites. Anders Albrechtslund in "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" and Susan B. Barnes in "A Privacy Paradox: Social Networking in the United States" similarly discuss how social networking is leading to a breakdown of privacy, potential damages to career opportunities, and sexual predation.

  4. Almost anyone who uses the internet is rather thankful for it. Most individuals use it for almost everything. People use it for information, to keep in contact with people, and even to buy things that we feel we need for the time being. Most of the new generation can generally agree that they feel that they can’t really survive without the internet. But even though most can agree that the internet is probably the best invention made in recent times, some people may never stop and think that maybe people are using the internet to use it against us and it can potentially hurt us, more than we know. It is said that people are using the internet to basically monitor what we do and since people may be watching what we do it threatens our privacy and maybe even our rights. In long term cases, these problems can hurt us into getting in jobs or even schools of our preference. Things what we do on the internet shouldn’t hurt us in these ways because people are targeting our private lives and that shouldn’t be done. Susan B. Barnes who wrote, “A Privacy paradox: Social networking in the Unites States”, Peter Barden who wrote, “Is The Internet The Harbinger of Orwell’s Nightmares?”, and Andres Albrechtslund who wrote, “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance”, all argue how these issues are hurting us and what we should do to stop it. A possible solution that could be done is open up an online community to help spread the word of what people are doing with knowing about our lives during internet usage. People should be able to live their lives through the internet without having to worry about what they want to put or do because it’s the people’s private lives and we all deserve to live how we want to after our profession lives.

  5. The popularity of social networking sites in the United States has grown increasingly, especially within teenagers. What they do not know about these sites are the negative consequences of using them. The articles, “Is The Internet The Harbinger Of Orwell’s Nightmares?” by Peter Braden, and “A privacy paradox: Social Networking in the United States” by Susan B. Barnes, both show the negative consequences of using such sites. Both authors argue that such sites threaten the users privacies. In addition, both authors also show that such sites are being used as data mining and information gathering tool by various sources such as the governments, companies and advertisers. Furthermore, they both also agree that these sites can cause a potential damage to academic and career opportunities of the users. In order to prevent such negative consequences, both authors suggest the government enact new legislations such as Deleting Online Predators Act, and data protection act. Although, using social sites may be fun and entertaining, it can surely have negative consequences on the users, such as threating their privacies, their valuable information being misused by unknown sources, and putting their academic and career opportunities at risks, therefore, to prevent such consequences the government should enact new legislations.

  6. The internet has advanced over the years and brings a lot of benefits as well as negatives. Internet makes interactions and communications easier, but while most of the people are using social networking to interact they don't realize the risks involved. Social networking sites have become extremely popular, therefore more and more people are on the internet giving out their information. The data that is being placed on the internet stays on the internet permanently, where 3rd parties and advertisers can access your information comfortably. Our privacy is being risked and the internet can harm you future in life. What most of the users do not realize is that they are being watched through the internet by the government and their privacy is being violated. The Authors Susan B. Barnes and Andres Albrechtslund in their articles “A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States” and “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance” write about how these sites are harming us and hold a bad future. They make points on how the government keeps an eye on everyone and our privacy is being violated. We should limit the amount of time we spend on social networking sites and take precautions.

  7. Today the internet has changed the way we communicate with each other. From connecting with each other through the use of social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace. This form of communication can also have a negative through the use of giving up crucial information that can possibly hurt us later on. Why should we willingly give up our E-mail accounts to join these social networking sites? The article's “Is The Internet The Harbinger Of Orwell’s Nightmares?” by Peter Braden, and “A privacy paradox: Social Networking in the United States” by Susan B. Barnes express that we as a society should have the total right to not forcefully give up our general information. There should be an alternative way in order for these sites to work without the use of E-Mail accounts and the forcefully giving out our phone numbers

  8. The popularity of social networking has dramatically increased within teenagers. The technology of social network has never been more advanced then it is today. Although many people use it around the world, does it mean that it is safe for it's users?.Articles has been made to let it be known that the internet is not as safe as people think it is, such as: " Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares" by Peter Braden and " Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" by Anders Albrechtslund. Both authors explain how internet user's privacy is at risk, how it is endangering our rights, and online social networking is anchored in surveillance practices. However, many issues are brought up about social netwroking, there are also solutions to help protect your privacy such as dont put out your real name when signing up for stuff and to read th statements that are provided before you simply hit the accept button because they can be using your information for other purposes.

  9. The internet is an extraordinary place where people from all around the world and from all different backgrounds can interact with one another and share conversation and information with each others. Teenagers assume that the information that they are providing to their friends and peers is strictly to them and only them, but that is a misunderstanding. Once the information is imbedded into the system it can not be removed or erased even if we delete it is still in the internet itself. Young teenagers do not realize the amount of information that they are providing can damage their future and jeopardize their safety. Authors like Susan Barnes and Anders Albrechtslund both agree fully with these arguments. They think that teenagers are being too careless with their information. Teenagers disclose too much information in the internet that can potentially damage their future and put their safety at risk.

  11. It is quite apparent that the amount of people who use the internet has rapidly increased in recent years. As with all technological innovations, the internet--social networking in particular--comes along with several issues. In his article, "Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares," Peter Braden points out the fabrication of data and reality on the internet as one such issue. Anders Albrechtslund, in "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance," discusses a number of privacy concerns including geotagging linked to cases of sexual assault and social networking profiles being the basis of decisions regarding employment. Albrechtslund also touches on the idea that everything posted on social networking sites is purely by choice, implying that individuals have complete control over what other users see, and are therefore partly at fault for their lack of privacy. In monitoring one's use of the internet, misinformation and breaches in privacy can easily be avoided.

  12. Social networking has changed the ways we communicate with people. In todays day and age the usage of the internet has been on the rise. We spend most of our time engaging in social network sites like Facebook and Twitter which clearly wins a lion's share of peoples attention. Even though social networking is very popular there are many dangers that put users at risk. Authors Susan B. Barnes and Peter Braden make their arguments about the cons of social media. They express that public nature of online profiles create security risk that most users are unaware about, and how consequences from over-sharing personal information can lead to vulnerability of sexual predators and lost job opportunities. Since social networking is here to stay we need to be more aware of how we give out our personal information.

  13. Communication is a major element in a society and it is practiced by not only only using a phone or writing a letter but through the Internet and the many social networks available for people. Email, Facebook, and many other social networks are worldwide ways of people interacting with one another with there’s no opportunity for face to face conversation. Many teens and young adults spend most of their time on these social either talking to friends/family or updating their status on what their doing that day. The information that is exploited through these sites weather it is voluntary or involuntary can become a threat to the applicant. Both authors Susan B. Barnes and Peter Braden both discus the issues that are arising from social networks such as privacy threats, potential damages to academic and career opportunities and the ease in volunteering potentially sensitive personal information; to prevent these from occurring a possible solution would be an open-editing and laymen content creation to further propel knowledge and truth.

  14. For most people social networking is an almost inevitable part of each day. There are some perks with keeping in touch with each other and staying updated, however, there are potential problems because of all the sharing and connectivity. Internet is a versatile tool that can be utilized for numerous tasks. Though we cannot forget the time spent on participating online could be the possible reason for the breakdown of privacy. The popularity of these social networking sites has been far-reaching. While more and more people are willingly giving out sensitive personal information. "The vast number of people contributing online means that internet has become a global community (Braden 6). Generally, that could be for the better or worse considering how advanced the world has become. "On the internet, the illusiuon of privacy creates boundary problems" (Barnes 3). Hence, the outcome of new users (unknowingly) sharing or exchanging too much information. "Sharing their personal information on social networking sites is not only sharing with online friends. Parents, future employers and university officials can also read journal entries (Barnes 3). By doing so these teenagers and young adults are jeopardizing their future academic and career opportunities. Without realizing they are ruining chances that could have been. Numerous threats to privacy, hidden controls over internet access and potential damages to academic and career opportunities are only a few of the many consequences that arise from social networking.

One solution is o breakdown of boundaries between real and online social integration.

  16. Social networking sites represent a level of communication that neither has to be told, nor has to be asked for. People publish their information free for everyone to see and collect. Anders Albrechtslund author of "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance” believes
Social networking sites are a tool for criminal investigations that help the police. People don't realize any information they put on the web gets stored permenitley. Peter Braden author of “Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell’s Nightmares” believes that the private life has ended. People’s lives are affected after putting all their personal information on the web. Companies like the CIA and Accel have access to the social networking sites and they can sell peoples information to other companies like the government to watch you. In a way this can be a violation to our privacy.

  17. Social networks are the phones of tomorrow. With the creation of the internet, social networks came into existence, gaining momentum as the internet continued to expand. Now with globally famous sites like Facebook, Twitter etc., social networks are the internet, gaining more and more popularity among the masses as they look towards the internet to provide them with sustenance of entertainment when they become bored or have nothing better to do. This has led to an addiction of social networks by the masses. The government spying on users, people displaying their information willingly, and the privacy paradox are the problems that arise from social network usage. Using authors Susan B. Barnes with “A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States”, Anders Albrechtslund with “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance” and Peter Braden with “Is the Internet the Harbinger of Orwell’s Nightmares”, I will support the problems that I've viewed as problems related to social network usage.

  18. Ever since the internet has become part of human lives, it has brought about many serious issues such as privacy protection, personal liberties and spying. Most people freely give their personal information to the website, like Susan B. Barnes points out in the article, “A privacy paradox”, it is dangerous because the information that one provide to those social network site are not always save. Surveillance or in other word, spying is happens everywhere at any time in cyberspace. Anders Albrechtslund once mentions in “Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance” that people will never know who is chatting with them in front of the screen. Peter Braden also claim in “Is The Internet The Harbinger Of Orewell’s Nightmares?” that somewhere in the public, every move that we do has been record. The social networking site can be very dangerous, we have to be careful about every word that we put in, eventually, those words may effect on us. To solve those situations, we need more powerful internet security system, better laws that protect the individual’s rights.

  20. People use the internet daily for various of reasons. Some of them use the internet to search up information about anything quickly and to receive and send information. In the articles "Online Social Networking as Participatory Surveillance" by Anders Albrechtslund, "A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States" by Susan Barnes and "Is The Internet The Harbinger of Orwell's Nightmares?" by Peter Brand, offers their views of internet use. The use of internet provides access to violation of privacy, lead to sexual predation, and can ruin ones reputation. A possible reasonable social, technical, and lawful solution provided by these authors is open-editing and laymen content creation to further propel knowledge and truth.
